John L. Colaizzi was born in 1938 in Pittsburgh, PA. He received his B.S. degree in Pharmacy from the University of Pittsburgh in 1960 and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in pharmaceutical science from Perdue University in 1962 and 1965 respectively. From 1965 to 1978, he taught at the University of Pittsburgh and became the Chairman of the Department of Pharmacy and Associate Dean of the School of Pharmacy. In 1978, he was appointed Dean of the School of Pharmacy and Professor of Pharmacy at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. In 2007, he became a Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Administration at Rutgers.

He is a member of the American Pharmacists Association, the America Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy, the New Jersey Pharmacists Association, the New Jersey Society of Health-System Pharmacists, the Middlesex County Pharmaceutical Society, the Medical History Society of New Jersey, and numerous honor societies. He maintains active licensure as a pharmacist in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

He has over 100 publications in both scientific and professional journals in pharmacy, including eight chapters in textbooks. He has received numerous awards.

Dr. Colaizzi has served as a consultant to the Drug Utilization Review Council, Department of Health, State of New Jersey, as a member of the Health Professions Education Advisory Committee, Department of Higher Education, State of New Jersey, and as a member of the Board o Directors of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. He served as a member of the New Jersey Department of Health’s Commission on Smoking OR Health and was appointed a member of the Medicaid Drug Utilization Review Board by the Governor of New Jersey.
