LED Lights Are Getting Popular

November 30, 2011 at 5:12 pm • Posted in GardeningComments Off

All over the place you have probably noticed that LED lights are taking over and replacing traditional lighting solutions. Some of these applications include LED grow lights, Christmas lights, car lights, home lights, and street lights. They have come a long way from their original purpose of being used as small indicator lights for Monsanto and Hewlett Packard. The reason they becoming so popular are because they are getting cheaper and provide many benefits over alternatives.

LED lights are long lasting and durable. This means they do not burn out or break as often as glass bulbs. The result is that you do not have to replace them as often and this can be a huge cost savings, especially for city lighting.

Another benefit is the lights burn cool. This means they have less of a chance of starting fires and melting things. This is especially beneficial for LED grow lights.

Great Solutions to Illuminate Your Patio at Night

October 25, 2011 at 7:15 am • Posted in GardeningComments Off

If you’re planning on using your patio this year, you’ll probably want some lights. Whether it’s for a Labor Day grill, Thanksgiving dinner, or even a Super Bowl party, you’ll probably be using your patio well into the night. And it’s the opposite of fun to have to stay in a place that you cannot see. You’ll need to illuminate the area, or you won’t be able to see anything at all. And, if you’re smart, you’ll probably also want to save money and be eco-friendly at the same time. If you are one of these smart people, you’ll probably buy solar patio lights. They are perfect for lighting up anywhere without giving off any carbon emissions or using up any supplied electricity.

First, decide where exactly you want your patio to be lit. You’ll need to supply maximum illumination to strategic areas where you expect people to be gathering, but you can easily afford to not light unused areas as much.

Save Time and a Lot of Effort with a Sod Cutter Rental

October 14, 2011 at 10:59 am • Posted in GardeningComments Off

If you like to do things by yourself just to make sure that you know how to do everything, then you are a lot like me. Learning how to cut sod out of your lawn is very important. The easiest way for you to do it by yourself is to get a sod cutter rental. As a landscaper I have tried doing it with a sod cutter and doing it by hand. My preference by a long shot is using a sod cutter rental. The reason why is because it saves me a lot of time. It also saves time for my employees as well.

Cutting sod is one of the hardest landscaping jobs. When you use a sod cutter, it makes the job almost bearable. You still have to gather up all of the rolls and haul them away and then dispose of them, but the part that involves actually cutting the sod, is very easy to deal with. Also if you try and remove it with a shovel, it takes a long time and you have thousands of pieces of sod everywhere. If you remove it with a cutter, you don’t have nearly as many pieces of sod and they all come together in nice easy rolls, which is convenient for hauling and disposing of the old sod.

Merits of In-house Event

September 17, 2011 at 4:53 pm • Posted in GardeningComments Off

There has been increased house event hosting of late, most parties and hangouts with friends are being carried out indoors. For most people it is most thrilling to call their friends over for a dinner or birthday celebration than to go spend on outside catering. The ability for one to host such an event which most likely will bring together quite a number of friends as word travels fast in such cases of free things will ultimately depend on the size of the house. If the living room cannot fit all their buddies they will have to come up with an alternative, in common cases the next best choice is a barbecue grill in the yard. Barbecue grills are custom to long time buddies who do not really want to throw a full scale party but just have a good time to drink, roast some meat and chat with their friends. The advantage of such is that minimal preparations take place, including tending the lawn, arranging scattered objects and provides seats if necessary.

Lawn Mowers Guide: All About Mowing

July 8, 2011 at 8:08 pm • Posted in GardeningComments Off

Do you have questions about lawn mowers? Are you looking for ZTR mower reviews? Then you’ve come to the right place! Here are some quick answers to some lawn mower questions.

What are mulching mowers?

Mulching mowers are lawn mowers that use a double-blade design to cut the grass. This way grass is further cut into tinier bits and pieces which are then scattered simultaneously throughout the yard. Mulching mowers produce an even spread of clippings which are not a characteristic of standard mowers. And these clipping actually then nourish your yard.

Do I just leave the grass clippings on my lawn as they are?

Leaving grass clippings as they are, especially when there are lots of them, could actually result to thatch build up. And this is not a sight to behold I tell you! So you need to mulch grass clippings into bits and pieces to get the most out of them. This turns them into worm food which becomes natural lawn food

There’s so much about lawn mowers which you need to discover. They’re not all about cutting grass and that’s it you know! They do help maintain the overall health of your lawn too! Oh and guess we’ll have to discuss the ins and outs of ZTR mowers another time.

Basic Care Tips for Your St Augustine Grass

June 2, 2011 at 12:05 pm • Posted in GardeningComments Off

You are probably aware that there are a number of grasses out there that you can plant in your yard to give you that rich and green lawn that you love. One of the more popular varieties that many people enjoy is St Augustine grass. This is a thick and wide blade grass that is best for the warmer parts of the United States down south. It can be grown in other areas but may require additional care to grow successfully. If you want this grass in your yard, there are a few care tips to remember.

This grass typically does better on a higher mower setting. Mowing it too low can hurt the spreading of the roots which can lead to brown spots. The higher mowing setting will still look neat and short when done right as this grass is so thick.

It’s also a good idea to use a mulching mower as the grass will get back nutrients versus catching the clipping. This results in much healthier St Augustine grass.

Planting Veg Seeds and Sidelining As Vegetable Gardener

January 26, 2011 at 7:21 am • Posted in GardeningComments Off

I love to cook and I am pretty good at it. Since we have some extra space in our backyard, I decided to start my own vegetable garden so that I have fresh produce for the dishes that I love to prepare. I have always thought that gardening is complicated, but after reading some materials about vegetable planting that I researched, I found out that it is pretty easy when armed with the right information. I started my garden by planting veg seeds that are easier to grow and require very little attention. Overtime, I started adding other more and more seeds to my garden. This passion is very rewarding, especially when it is time to harvest the veggies and I also realized that my “sideline” is actually saving me money. Another thing that I learned from my research about gardening is that the seeds from the vegetables that I grew should be saved and planted again instead of buying new ones.

The Reliable Drain to Waste System

January 17, 2011 at 12:57 pm • Posted in GardeningComments Off

The world of gardening can be fun and exciting. With so many different designs in hydroponics, one can spend a great deal of time just learning about all the different ways these hydroponic systems work. Out of all these systems, the one which is the most popular and has the least amount of problems is the drain to waste setup. This setup is simple and produces great results for any garden.

The concept is simple. A reservoir is setup which contains the nutrient rich water. This water is then pH adjusted and allowed to settle. A pump is then used to feed the plants with this stabilized water. The water is then allowed to overflow from the growing medium. This over flow makes it way to the drain. The waste or drain water can either be recycled for use in other gardens or lawns or allowed to go down the drain.

Best String Trimmer Equals Fairy Godmother

December 8, 2010 at 6:26 pm • Posted in GardeningComments Off

Having your own best string trimmer is like having a fairy godmother in a fantasy story. With just one snap of a finger, you will have a cleaner and tidier front and back yard. It works pretty fast and it is also very easy to use. Almost anybody can use it without any problem. But if I were to have a fairy godmother I would rather have her stop the growth of the grass at a certain height so that I wouldn’t have to trim the grass. That makes me sound totally lazy but I could think of a number of things to do than trimming the grass like reading romance novels, or watching the latest movies on my DVD, or surf the internet for new gadgets that will help add color to my life. I can also use it to spend time with my best friend and talk about anything and everything under the sun. Who knows, we might even come up with an idea that will totally eliminate the need to trim the lawn.

Plant a Honeysuckle Vine for a Great Landscape Boost

November 19, 2010 at 10:45 am • Posted in GardeningComments Off

Some plants you grow in your yard not only have a beautiful show of color as they bloom, but are so fragrant you can smell them as soon as you open your door. One of the favorites is a honeysuckle vine and it smells wonderful, and the birds and the bees love them too. These vines make a carpet of trumpet shaped flowers that can be trained to grow on a fence or trellis. They bloom from spring clear through summer and you can get them in shades of yellow, white or orange. They add a beautiful landscape element where ever you plant them, and they will continue to spread along a fence or rock wall, draping it in colorful fragrant blooms. The smell brings back fond memories from childhood of a grandmother’s garden down the road. It’s one of the old fashioned flowers many songs have been written about over the years.

Shrubs and Vines in Confined Areas

October 29, 2010 at 2:45 am • Posted in GardeningComments Off

It is more important to use plants with this sort of refined foliage on small properties than on larger areas. One reason is that they are closer to the observer who will find them more pleasant to look at year in and year out. The second is that plants with large leaves appear even larger than they are and tend to make the property look smaller. The Big-leaf Magnolia (Magnolia grandfolia) would certainly not look at home on a small city lot; a tree like the Dogwood, Japanese Maple, or American Hornbeam would be more in keeping.

Variegated Foliage

Variegated foliage or foliage of two or more tones of green should be avoided if possible. It attracts so much attention that it is difficult to make the remainder of the garden spectacular enough to counterbalance the effect. Of course, where the object is to attract attention, plants of that type can prove rather successful. But when the sun fades and night falls the variegated foliage plays little part, it is then the solar garden light that add to the landscape look.

Bright Evergreens

Some of the highly colored evergreens, although attention arrest ing in the nursery sales yard, are likely in due time to look like square pegs in round holes when established in a garden. Such evergreens are: Bushgold (Thu/a occidentalis aurea), Goldbush (Thula orientalis aurea nana), Yellow Column Arborvitae (Thu/a orientalis elegantissima), Yellow Thread Falsecypress (Chameacyparis pisifera filifera aurea), and Sulfur-plume Falsecypress (Chamaecyparis pisifera plumosa filifera).

Such evergreens should be avoided or used with extreme care and artistry.
